A large stretch of flat, low land.
Most of our farms and villages stand on plains.
River
A long stream of water flowing across the land.
Minam ate her lunch beside one.
Valley
The low land between two mountains or hills.
Rivers usually flow through valleys.
Summit
The very top of a mountain.
Climbers try to reach the summit.
Foot
The bottom part of a mountain, where it meets flat land.
Minam’s village is at the foot of the Himalayas.
Slope
The sloping side of a hill or mountain, going up or down.
You walk up a slope to reach the summit.
Plateau
Flat land that stands high above the land around it.
Think of a table — flat on top, high off the floor.
Hill
A raised piece of land, lower and rounder than a mountain.
A hill is a mountain’s smaller cousin.
Mountain range
A long row of mountains standing one after another.
The Himalayas are a mountain range.
Why the dictionary is worth opening: Several of these words are close in meaning — hill and mountain, plain and plateau. The dictionary shows you the one small difference that separates them. A plateau is flat and high; a plain is flat and low.
Tip — how to say them:plateau is said “pla-toh”. Summit has the stress on the first part: “sum-mit”.

The small round rise with a house on it — much lower than a mountain.
The three flat words are the tricky ones. A plain is flat and low. A plateau is flat but high, with steep sides. A valley is low but squeezed between two mountains. Ask yourself two questions each time: Is it flat? and Is it high or low?
Check it yourself: Every word in the box is used exactly once. If a word is left over, one of your labels is wrong.
