Q1.
New Words: declared, superiority, disagreement, surrender. Find out what each new word means.
Answer
These are the four new words the book puts in the New Words box on page 92. Each one is used in this very chapter.
| Word | What it means | Where it comes in the chapter |
|---|---|---|
| declared | said something out loud, so that all could hear | “Aakho declared that the tigers had the first right on all the things.” (page 96) |
| superiority | being better or greater than others | “They had a disagreement about their superiority.” (page 89) |
| disagreement | not agreeing with one another | “They had a disagreement about their superiority.” (page 89) |
| surrender | to give up and accept that you have lost | “he says ‘Joko’ (surrender).” (page 91) |
Sentences of my own, to show how they are used:
- The umpire declared our team the winner.
- The lion behaves as if he has superiority over all the animals.
- The two friends had a small disagreement about the score.
- The caught player had to surrender and leave the circle.
Why disagreement looks long: Break it up — dis + agree + ment. Agree means to say yes together. Dis- turns a word into its opposite. -ment makes it the name of a thing. So disagreement is the name for not agreeing.
