Q1.
How does a top spin?
Answer

A top spins because we give it a quick twist and it then turns on its pointed tip.

Set-up: wind the string round the top, hold the end and pull it sharply.
  1. We wind a string around the top, or twist its stem sharply with our fingers.
  2. The top starts turning round and round on its sharp tip.
  3. Only the tiny tip touches the ground, so the top keeps turning for a long time.
  4. Slowly it turns less and less, begins to shake, and then falls down.
Why it happens: The top stays standing because it is the same on all sides and turns fast. When it slows down it can no longer stay upright, so it wobbles and falls.
Did you know? Spinning tops have been used in India for thousands of years. Earlier they were made of clay. The lattu is a popular Indian top and is usually made of wood.
