Q1.
Draw the missing seconds hand on the clocks on the right side. (1) Raghu took 20 sec. to read a sentence in his book.
Answer
Draw the seconds hand pointing at 4.
The seconds hand starts at 12 and moves 20 seconds forward, which lands it on the 4.
Read the left clock. The red seconds hand is on 12, so the start reading is 0 seconds.
Add the time taken. 0 + 20 = 20 seconds.
Turn 20 seconds into a number on the dial. Each big number is 5 seconds, so divide: 20 ÷ 5 = 4.
Draw a thin hand from the centre to the 4. Make it the longest hand on the dial.
Start = 0 s, time taken = 20 s 0 + 20 = 20 seconds 20 ÷ 5 = the number 4 on the dial
Tip: The seconds hand is always drawn thinnest and longest. If your hand is short and fat, it will look like the hour hand.
Q2.
(2) Rani took 30 sec. to color a rectangle.
Answer
Draw the seconds hand pointing at 6 — straight down.
Half a round of the dial is 30 seconds, and half a round from 12 lands on 6.
Left clock: red hand on 12 → start reading 0 seconds.
Add: 0 + 30 = 30 seconds.
Find the number: 30 ÷ 5 = 6.
Draw the thin hand straight down to the 6.
30 seconds = 30 ÷ 5 = the number 6 30 seconds is also half a minute, because 60 ÷ 2 = 30
Picture it: Half of the round dial is 30 seconds, a quarter of it is 15 seconds, and three quarters is 45 seconds. Learn these three and you can read a seconds hand at a glance.

(3) Raghav took 60 sec. to move from his home to the garden.
Answer
Draw the seconds hand pointing at 9 — exactly where it was before.
After one full round the seconds hand comes back to 9. The minute hand has moved on by one small mark.
Left clock: the red hand is on 9, so the start reading is 45 seconds.
Add the time taken: 45 + 60 = 105 seconds.
Exchange 60 of them for 1 minute: 105 − 60 = 45. So it is 1 minute and 45 seconds later.
The whole minute is shown by the minute hand, not by the red hand. So the red hand ends up back at 45 seconds, which is the number 9.

Why 60 seconds brings it back to the same place: One full round of the dial is 60 seconds. So after exactly 60 seconds the hand has come home. Take 120 seconds and it would come home twice.
Also mark this: the green minute hand should now sit one small mark further on, because a whole minute has passed.

(4) Ritu took 40 sec. to wash a plate.
Answer
Draw the seconds hand pointing at 7.
The seconds hand starts at 11 (55 seconds), sweeps past 12, and stops at 7 (35 seconds).
Left clock: the red hand is on 11. Count in fives: 5, 10, … , 55 seconds.
Add the time taken: 55 + 40 = 95 seconds.
95 is more than 60, so the hand has crossed the 12. Exchange 60 seconds for 1 minute: 95 − 60 = 35.
Find the number: 35 ÷ 5 = 7. Draw the thin hand to the 7.

Why we take away 60 and not 100: This is where time is different from ordinary numbers. In ordinary counting we bundle up in tens. In time we bundle up in sixties: 60 seconds make one minute, so as soon as we reach 60 we hand it over to the minute hand and carry on from 0.
Count it on the dial instead: From 11 to 12 is 5 seconds. That leaves 40 − 5 = 35 seconds still to go from the top. 35 seconds from 12 is the number 7 ✓
