Q1.
Anu has recorded the weights of the items in her house. Check if she has recorded them correctly by putting a tick against them if they look correct. 1. Iron Almirah – 40 g 2. Bed – 60 kg 3. Rice Bag – 5 kg 4. Sofa – 30 g 5. Bucket – 1 kg 800 g 6. Water Bottle – 650 g 7. Refrigerator – 50 g
Answer
Four of them are correct: the Bed, the Rice Bag, the Bucket and the Water Bottle. Put a tick against 2, 3, 5 and 6.
Here is how to check each one. Ask yourself: can I lift this thing with one hand?
- If you can lift it easily with one hand, its weight is in grams (g).
- If it is heavy — you need both hands, or you cannot lift it at all — its weight is in kilograms (kg).
- Remember: 1,000 g = 1 kg. So 40 g is less than a small packet of biscuits.
| Item | Anu wrote | Tick? | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Iron Almirah | 40 g | ✗ | 40 g is lighter than a small soap bar. An iron almirah is very heavy. It should be about 40 kg. |
| 2. Bed | 60 kg | ✓ | A bed is heavy — about the weight of a grown-up person. Correct. |
| 3. Rice Bag | 5 kg | ✓ | A small rice bag from the shop really is about 5 kg. Correct. |
| 4. Sofa | 30 g | ✗ | 30 g is about the weight of a matchbox. A sofa should be about 30 kg. |
| 5. Bucket | 1 kg 800 g | ✓ | An empty plastic bucket really is under 2 kg. Correct. |
| 6. Water Bottle | 650 g | ✓ | A filled school water bottle is a little more than half a kilogram. Correct. |
| 7. Refrigerator | 50 g | ✗ | 50 g is about the weight of an egg. A refrigerator should be about 50 kg. |
Why it happens: Anu did not write wrong numbers. She wrote wrong units. For the almirah, the sofa and the refrigerator she wrote g where she should have written kg. A gram is very small — 1,000 grams together make only 1 kilogram. So choosing the unit is as important as choosing the number.
Check it yourself: Pick up things at home. A pencil, an eraser, a coin — grams. A school bag, a gas cylinder, a chair — kilograms. Once you feel the difference in your hands, you will never mix them up.
