Q1.
If a sugar sachet weighs 5 g, how much will it be in milligrams?
Answer

5 g = 5,000 mg.

  1. Recall the rule. 1 g = 1,000 mg.
  2. Multiply the number of grams by 1,000. 5 × 1,000 = 5,000.
  3. Write the unit. 5,000 mg.
1 g = 1,000 mg
5 g = 5 × 1,000 = 5,000 mg
Why it happens: Changing g to mg is exactly like changing kg to g. You are going from a bigger unit to a smaller unit, so you need more of them — a thousand times more. Bigger unit to smaller unit: multiply.
Did you know? The small sugar sachet you get with tea at a stall really is about 5 g. That is 5,000 tiny milligrams in one little paper packet.

  1. Change the gram part. 4 g = 4 × 1,000 = 4,000 mg.
  2. Keep the mg part. 100 mg.
  3. Add. 4,000 mg + 100 mg = 4,100 mg.
4 g = 4,000 mg
4 g 100 mg = 4,000 + 100 = 4,100 mg
Why it looks familiar: This is the very same job as changing 4 kg 100 g into 4,100 g. Only the names of the units changed. The method never changes — multiply the bigger unit by 1,000 and add the smaller unit.

A goldsmith has made an ornament weighing 10 g 500 mg. What will its weight be in milligrams?
Answer

10 g 500 mg = 10,500 mg.

  1. Change the gram part. 10 g = 10 × 1,000 = 10,000 mg.
  2. Keep the mg part. 500 mg.
  3. Add. 10,000 mg + 500 mg = 10,500 mg.
10 g = 10,000 mg
10 g 500 mg = 10,000 + 500 = 10,500 mg

Did you know? Goldsmiths weigh in very small units because gold is costly. A mistake of even 100 mg — one tenth of a gram — can change the price of the ornament.
