Harpreet's family planned a picnic over the weekend. Her mother and father packed different food items to take along. The following is the list of fruits they carried — Watermelon – 3 kg, Pineapple – 1 kg 750 g, Apples – 1 kg 250 g, Mangoes – 2 kg. Among the fruits they carried, which one has the (a) highest weight? (b) least weight? (c) Arrange the items in descending order of their weight.
Answer

(a) The watermelon, 3 kg.  (b) The apples, 1 kg 250 g.  (c) Watermelon, Mangoes, Pineapple, Apples.

Before comparing, put every weight into the same unit. Grams is the easiest.

  1. Change each one to grams. Watermelon 3 kg = 3,000 g. Pineapple 1 kg 750 g = 1,750 g. Apples 1 kg 250 g = 1,250 g. Mangoes 2 kg = 2,000 g.
  2. Now they are all in grams, so just compare the numbers.
  3. Order them from biggest to smallest — that is what descending means.

(a) Highest weight → Watermelon (3 kg)
(b) Least weight → Apples (1 kg 250 g)
(c) Descending order → Watermelon (3 kg), Mangoes (2 kg), Pineapple (1 kg 750 g), Apples (1 kg 250 g)
Why change to grams first: The pineapple and the apples both start with “1 kg”, so you cannot tell them apart by the kilogram alone. Once both are grams — 1,750 and 1,250 — the answer jumps out.
Total for fun: 3,000 + 2,000 + 1,750 + 1,250 = 8,000 g = 8 kg of fruit. That is a heavy picnic bag!

Use the same three steps every time.

  1. Change both sides into grams. Then both sides speak the same language.
  2. Compare the two numbers.
  3. Write the sign — the open mouth always faces the bigger number.

Look carefully at (e). The right side has the bigger gram number (500 against 50), and that tricks many students. But the kilograms are counted first, and 5 kg beats 4 kg. Kilograms are worth a thousand times more than grams, so they decide first — just as rupees decide before paise.
Remember the sign: Think of a crocodile's mouth. It always opens towards the bigger meal. 1,600 < 1,700 — the mouth opens to 1,700.
