Shrenu is baking cakes for her shop. She needs 3 kg 500 g flour. Her kitchen scale measures only in grams. What should her kitchen scale show for 3 kg 500 g of flour?

Her scale should show 3,500 g.

Shrenu's flour comes in two pieces — 3 whole kilograms and 500 loose grams. Change only the kilogram piece, then join the two.

  1. Change the kg part. 1 kg = 1,000 g, so 3 kg = 3 × 1,000 = 3,000 g.
  2. Keep the g part as it is. It is already in grams: 500 g.
  3. Add the two pieces. 3,000 g + 500 g = 3,500 g.
3 kg = 3 × 1,000 = 3,000 g
3 kg 500 g = 3,000 g + 500 g = 3,500 g
Why it happens: A scale can only speak one language. Shrenu's scale speaks grams. So she must say the same weight in grams before the scale can understand her.

  3. Add. 2,000 g + 250 g = 2,250 g.

2 kg 250 g = 2,000 g + 250 g = 2,250 g
Tip: There is a quick way to write it. Write the kilogram number, then write the gram number in three boxes. 2 | 250 → 2,250 g. If the gram part is short, put zeros in front: 2 kg 50 g → 2 | 050 → 2,050 g.
