Answer

The map on page 12 names eight rivers: Brahmaputra, Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada, Tapti, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri. Trace each one with your finger until it reaches the sea, then tick the right column.

Yamuna✓ (it joins the Ganga first)
Tapti
Krishna
Kaveri
Bay of Bengal — 6 rivers: Ganga, Yamuna, Brahmaputra, Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri
Arabian Sea — 2 rivers: Narmada, Tapti
Why so many go east: The high Western Ghats run close to the west coast, so the land east of them slopes gently all the way to the Bay of Bengal. Only the Narmada and the Tapti lie in valleys that slope the other way, towards the west.
A word for it: a river that joins a bigger river instead of going straight to the sea, like the Yamuna joining the Ganga, is called a tributary. You will meet that word again in Chapter 2.
