Grass and soil are full of tiny gaps, and roots make small channels going down, so the rain sinks in. Concrete and stone slabs have no gaps. The water simply slides off them. That is why a city full of cemented surfaces loses its groundwater — the rain falls, but it never reaches the ground below. What helps recharge: keeping some open, uncovered ground; digging soak pits; keeping ponds and human-made lakes; planting more trees. The johads of Rajasthan — small earthen dams that catch rainwater — have been doing this job for hundreds of years.
