Book page 26 Updated on2026-09-19

Q1.
Make a poster in your classroom showing all the ways rivers help people. Include drawings of homes, farms, boats, fishermen and more.
Answer

How to make the poster, step by step:

  1. Take a chart paper and turn it sideways (landscape). Write the title in big letters at the top: “Our River Gives Us Life”.
  2. With a blue sketch pen, draw a wide river winding from the top-left corner down to the bottom-right corner. Make it thin at the top and wide at the bottom, the way a real river grows.
  3. At the top-left draw hills and a small stream coming out of them. Label it Origin.
  4. Draw one or two small streams joining the river. Label them Tributaries.
  5. At the bottom-right draw the river splitting into many small streams before the sea. Label it Delta.
  6. Now fill the two banks with small drawings. Keep them simple and label each one.
  7. Colour the water blue, the fields green and the houses brown. Do the colouring last.

What to draw on the banks — and the label for each:

Draw thisLabel it
Houses with a woman filling a pot at a tapWater for our homes
Green fields with a canal running into themWater for our crops
A fisherman throwing a net from a boatFish and a living
A boat carrying sacks and peopleTravel and transport
A dam wall with a lake behind it and a power lineStored water and electricity
A factory building beside the riverWater for making things
Cattle drinking, birds, fish, a crocodileA home for wildlife
A temple with people taking a dip, a festival crowdFestivals and faith
Visitors in a raft with helmets and life jacketsEcotourism
A dustbin on the bank and a child picking up a wrapperKeep me clean!
What makes a poster good: big clear pictures, few words, and every picture labelled. A poster is read from three metres away, so nothing on it should be small. Leave the bottom strip empty for one slogan, for example: “Every drop counts — keep our river clean.”
Why this activity is worth doing: When you have to draw all the ways a river helps, you notice how many there are. Water, food, work, travel, electricity, festivals and wildlife all come from one river. That is why the chapter says people have always built their homes near rivers.
