Why every animal needs it: Moving, flying, swimming, hunting and hiding are all work, and work always needs energy. No animal can get energy out of nothing. So every animal must eat.
And where does the food get its energy? Plants make their food using sunlight. Animals eat plants, or eat animals that ate plants. So in the end almost all our energy comes from the Sun — which is why the book says the Sun is the main source of energy for life on Earth.
