Q1.
Study the globe and write in the space given below, when it is day time in India, which countries will have night?
Answer
When it is day in India, it is night in the countries on the opposite side of the globe — mainly the countries of North and South America. These include the United States of America, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Chile.
How to find this out on the globe:
- Find India on the globe and put your finger on it.
- Now turn the globe halfway round, until the point exactly opposite India comes to the front.
- Look at which countries are near that point. Those are the countries that are in darkness while India is in sunlight.
- Check it with the torch: keep the torch shining on India and look at the other side of the globe. It is completely dark there.
| Country | Roughly what time it is there when it is 12 noon in India | Day or night? |
|---|---|---|
| United States of America (New York) | About 1:30 in the morning | Night |
| United States of America (Los Angeles) | About 10:30 at night | Night |
| Canada | Between about 11 at night and 3 in the morning | Night |
| Mexico | About half past midnight | Night |
| Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Chile | Between about 1:30 and 3:30 in the morning | Night |
| Japan and Australia | Afternoon | Day |
| Countries in Europe, such as the U.K. | Early morning, about 6:30 | Day (just beginning) |
Why it works out this way: The Earth is a ball, and the Sun can light only one half of it. India and America are on opposite halves. So when our half is turned towards the Sun, their half must be turned away — and it is night there. About twelve hours later the Earth has turned halfway round, and everything is the other way about: they get the daylight and we get the night.
A neat way to remember it: That is why a cricket match played in Australia comes on our television in the morning, and a match played in America comes on in the middle of our night. The players there are playing in their daytime.
