Along with your classmates, call out the name ‘Rama’ – softly, loudly and very loudly.

Answer

This is a speaking activity, and it is worth doing properly, because the whole plot turns on it.

Softly — almost a whisper, as if the person were standing inside the same room. “Rama…”
Loudly — a normal calling voice, as if he were in the yard outside. “Rama! Rama!”
Very loudly — a full shout, as if he were far away in the street. “RAMA! RAMA!”

Why the three levels matter: The wife has to reach the kotwal wherever he happens to be — in the house, in the yard or in the street — without the thief guessing what she is doing. The three volumes are the three parts of the plan, and the third one is what finally brings Rama running.

Try This: Stand at three distances in the school ground — 2 metres, 10 metres and 30 metres — and find out for yourself how loud you must be for a friend to hear the name each time.

What do you think will happen next in the story?

Answer

My prediction: Rama, the village kotwal, will hear his name being shouted, come running to the house, discover the hole in the wall and catch the thief.

Two clues in the story point that way. First, the caption on page 22 has already told us, “Rama was the village kotwal” — a detail the writer would not give unless it mattered. Second, the wife shouts “RAMA! RAMA!” at the very top of her voice, and the very next panel shows a man in a red uniform with a stick running through the night.

Check it yourself: Read on. Rama finds the freshly dug hole, says “Oh, oh! Some thief has dug his way into this house,” crawls in and arrests the thief — exactly as the couple planned.
