Yes. A raven does not sing a sweet song like a koel or a bulbul. It makes a deep, rough, scratchy sound — a croak, very like the sound a frog makes at night. Its cousin the crow makes the familiar harsh “caw”.
Why this fact matters for the poem: The whole joke of the poem depends on it. The Fox asks the Raven to sing, knowing perfectly well that the bird can only croak. The poem says the Raven “did not see the joke, / Forgot that his voice was just a croak.” Keep this in mind as you read.
