The rhyme scheme: Every stanza has four lines, and the lines rhyme in pairs — line 1 with line 2, and line 3 with line 4. We write this as aabb. Notice that rhyme is about sound, not spelling: pride and eyed look nothing alike but rhyme perfectly.

Q2.

Study the underlined words in the poem. 1. For the Raven held in his great big beak. 2. The song of sweet birds. … Now, pick another example of alliteration from Stanza 2.

Answer

Answer: “these woods would” in the last line of Stanza 2 — “The birds of these woods would call you King.” Both words begin with the same /w/ sound, one right after the other.

Stanza 2 also repeats the /s/ sound again and again: “Said … Sir Raven … Such feathers … only sing”. This soft hissing runs right through the Fox's sweet talk.

Remember the definition: Alliteration is the repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of two or more words that come close together — like big beak or song of sweet birds. Poets use it to make a line pleasant to say and easy to remember.

Try This: Find the alliteration in Stanza 1 too — “far to seek” follows “the Fox would go”, and the whole line “For the Raven held in his great big beak” carries the /b/ of big beak.

Choose the correct opposites from the box given below and complete the table. There are two extra words that you will not need. [wise, happy, humility, flew, remembered, notice, dim, cried, silly] Use any four words from the table given above to make sentences of your own.

The two extra words are happy and silly. (Silly is a synonym of foolish, not its opposite — a common trap.)

Four sentences of my own:

The parrot flew off the moment my little brother clapped his hands.
I remembered to switch off the fan before leaving the classroom.
Our grandmother is a wise woman who settles every quarrel in the street.
The captain accepted the trophy with great humility and thanked the whole team.

Tip: Pride and humility are both nouns, so the opposite must also be a noun — not the adjective “humble”. Always match the part of speech when you look for an opposite.
