Q1.

Let us write some rhyming words. One has been done for you. (Words from the poem — Stanza 1: well, shell; Stanzas 2, 3, 4: ___ ; New rhyming words — Stanza 1: fell)

Answer

In this poem the second and fourth lines of every stanza rhyme. Find that pair in each stanza, then add a new word of your own that rhymes with it.

A word of caution on stanza 4: Very few English words rhyme exactly with labours / neighbours. Harbours and arbours are the safest. Words like favours and vapours are near rhymes — they sound close but not exact. Say them aloud and you will hear the difference.

What makes two words rhyme: not the spelling but the sound from the last stressed vowel onwards. Well and shell are spelt differently yet rhyme perfectly; love and move look alike yet do not rhyme at all.

Now, complete a new stanza with rhyming words at the end of each line: 'I fly high and I fly low, / But one thing I surely k __ __ __, / Whenever I wish to rest, / My little nest is the __ __ __t.'

The completed stanza:

I fly high and I fly low,
But one thing I surely know,

The poet uses words like 'pale', 'blue', 'round', 'straw' and 'little' to describe the bird's nest. Read a few more describing words: pointed, green, thin, brown, small, wooden, hanging, round. Now, use the describing words given in the box to create six sentences based on the given picture.

Six sentences using the describing words:

A small wooden birdhouse hangs from the branch of a tree.

There is a round hole in the front through which the bird goes in and out.
A brown bird with a long tail is sitting at the door of the house.
The birdhouse is hanging from a thin branch by a string.
Fresh green leaves grow on the branch above the little house.

What a describing word does: Words like these are adjectives. They stand before a noun and tell us which one, what kind, what colour, what shape. Remove them and the sentence becomes flat: “A house hangs from a branch” tells you almost nothing.
