Read or listen to the weather reports for a place for 10 successive days. Record the maximum and minimum air temperature for each day in Table 7.3. Analyse the data in Table 7.3.

Analysing this data:

  • Highest maximum = 29 °C (10 Feb); lowest maximum = 22 °C (7 Feb).
  • Highest minimum = 15 °C (10 Feb); lowest minimum = 8 °C (7 Feb).
  • The daily difference (maximum – minimum) stays around 13 °C to 14 °C.
  • Over the ten days both the maximum and the minimum are slowly rising — winter is giving way to summer.
Tip: Draw the two columns as two lines on a graph, days along the bottom and temperature in °C up the side. The rise and fall shows up at a glance.

Does the maximum and minimum temperature stay at the same level during these days?
Answer

No. Both the maximum and the minimum temperature change from day to day.

Why it happens: weather depends on several factors at once — clouds, wind, rain, humidity and how strongly the Sun shines. Because those factors change every day, these temperatures usually vary every day too.

There is, however, a clear seasonal pattern behind the daily jumps:

  • As we approach the summer season, the temperature rises.
  • During the winter season, it falls.
Did you know? Air temperature is an important weather parameter and is monitored at weather stations all over the world. Along with other parameters, this data is used for making weather forecasts. Anna Mani — the “Weather Woman of India”, quoted at the start of this chapter — built many of the instruments India uses for exactly this work.
