Sample conversation — Problem 3: Sore throat
Doctor: Good morning. Please come in and sit down.
Patient: Good morning, Doctor. Thank you.
Doctor: What seems to be the trouble?
Patient: My throat has been hurting since yesterday, Doctor.
Doctor: Does it hurt when you swallow? Any fever or cough?
Patient: Yes, it hurts when I swallow, and my voice has gone rough. There is no fever.
Doctor: It is a sore throat. Gargle with warm salt water three times a day.
Patient: How much salt should I put in the water, Doctor?
Doctor: Half a teaspoon in a glass of warm water is enough. Also drink herbal teas and avoid cold drinks and ice cream.
Patient: I understand. Should I come again?
Doctor: Come and see me on Thursday if it has not settled by then.
Patient: Certainly, Doctor. Thank you very much.
Sample conversation — Problem 1: Cough and cold
Doctor: Good afternoon. How are you today?
Patient: Not very well, Doctor. I have been coughing all week.
Doctor: Is your nose blocked? Do you feel cold in the evenings?
Patient: Yes, both. And the cough is worse at night.
Doctor: It is a common cough and cold. Take a spoon of ginger and honey mixed together, twice a day.
Patient: Should I take it before or after meals?
Doctor: After meals. Drink plenty of warm fluids and take proper rest.
Patient: Thank you. When should I come again?
Doctor: Next Monday, if the cough continues.
Patient: All right, Doctor. Thank you so much.
What earns marks in this task: polite openings and closings, at least one clarifying question from the patient, symptoms described in detail rather than in one word, and a clear next appointment at the end. Use the same frame for Problems 2 and 4, changing only the symptoms and the remedy.
