What happens when an object comes in the path of light?
Answer
It depends on the material the object is made of:

Why it happens: Light moves in straight lines. If the material lets those straight rays through, the screen stays lit. If the material stops them, the region of the screen just behind the object gets no light at all — and that dark patch is the shadow.
