Q1.
You will listen to a woman read the special broadcast of the news. As you listen, arrange the pictures in the correct sequence of the events that took place. (Transcript for teacher on page 99)
Answer
The correct sequence of the six pictures is 3 → 6 → 1 → 5 → 2 → 4.
| Order | Picture | What it shows | The line in the broadcast |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 | The woman at the edge of the river, with a boy standing on the far bank | “a woman who had fallen into the Domri River while washing clothes” |
| 2 | 6 | The woman in the water near the bank, arm raised, onlookers watching from across | “…had fallen into the Domri River” |
| 3 | 1 | Close-up of the woman being swept along, struggling | “The 43-year-old woman was struggling to stay afloat in the strong currents” |
| 4 | 5 | The boy diving head-first into the river | “Rohan, without a moment's hesitation, leapt into the river” |
| 5 | 2 | The boy pulling the woman up onto the bank as others look on | “Rohan managed to reach the woman and pull her to safety… Onlookers… were in awe” |
| 6 | 4 | The boy receiving an award on a stage while an audience applauds | “honoured with the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2023 by the President of India” |
How to do a picture-sequencing task: before the recording begins, look at the pictures and find the two you are certain about — usually the first and the last. Here the award ceremony is obviously the end and the woman at the water's edge the beginning. That leaves only four to place, and the broadcast supplies them in order.
Tip: listen for the sequence words — on a fateful morning, when, without a moment's hesitation, despite, did not go unnoticed, now. A news report almost always moves in strict time order, which makes it the easiest kind of listening text to sequence.
