Why it happens: all four roles come from a single fact — the Himalaya are young and very high, thrown up by the still-continuing collision of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates. Height is what blocks the wind, height is what freezes water into storage, height is what stacks the climate belts, and height is what makes a barrier. Compare them with the Urals, which are just as long but ancient and worn down: the Urals divide two continents on the map but stop no wind and store no glaciers.
