A. Look at the pictures and answer the questions given below. 1. What is Lubang doing, to help his injured friend, and what will they do next?
Picture 1 (page 6) — what it shows: Two boys are outdoors on a path. The boy on the left wears a blue shirt and red shorts. His face looks sad and he is limping. A stone lies on the ground behind him. The boy on the right wears an orange t-shirt and purple trousers. He has put one arm around his friend’s shoulder and is holding him up. His other hand points forward.

Answer
Lubang is holding his injured friend up and helping him walk. He has put one arm around his friend’s shoulder so that his friend does not fall.
What they will do next: They will walk slowly to the school first-aid room. There, the teacher will clean the hurt and put a bandage on it.
Model written answer: Lubang’s friend has fallen and hurt his leg. Lubang has put his arm around him and is helping him to walk. Next, they will go to the teacher, and the hurt will be cleaned and bandaged.
Why we use “will”: The picture shows what is happening now. The second part of the question asks about what has not happened yet. For that we use will — they will go, the teacher will put a bandage.

Picture 2 (page 6) — what it shows: Three children are in their classroom. A boy in a yellow shirt and red shorts is dropping waste paper into a green dustbin. A girl in an orange top and red skirt is standing on her toes and wiping the window glass with a cloth. A third girl, in the same orange top and red skirt, is putting a blue book into an open wooden cupboard that already holds a green book.

Obang, Manya and Tina are cleaning their classroom together. Each one has taken up a different job.
One is putting waste paper into the green dustbin.
One is wiping the window glass with a cloth.
One is keeping the books neatly in the cupboard.
What they will do next: They will finish their jobs and wash their hands. Then they will sit down in a clean, tidy classroom.
Model written answer: Obang, Manya and Tina are cleaning their classroom. One is throwing the waste into the dustbin, one is cleaning the window and one is arranging the books. Next, they will finish the work, wash their hands and sit in a neat classroom.
Why they share the work: Three different jobs are being done at the same time. This is teamwork — “With each hand joined, the goal is near.”

Picture 3 (page 6) — what it shows: A road with a black-and-white zebra crossing. A traffic light stands beside it. An old lady with grey hair, in an orange saree and a blue jacket, is walking on the zebra crossing. A young girl in a purple top and yellow leggings walks beside her and holds her hand. The girl carries a blue bag in her other hand.

Anna is helping an old lady to cross the road. She is holding the old lady’s hand and walking beside her on the zebra crossing.
What the old lady will do next: She will reach the other side safely. Then she will thank Anna, bless her and walk on.

Why Anna uses the zebra crossing: The white stripes are the safe place to cross. Drivers must stop there. An old person walks slowly, so crossing with someone’s help is much safer.

Picture 4 (page 6) — what it shows: Three children sit around a round table. A boy in a striped t-shirt is on the left, a girl with plaits and a yellow top is in the middle, and a girl in a green top sits on the right in a wheelchair. A big sheet of paper is spread on the table. Paint pots, brushes and a cup of water are on it, and colours have already been put on the paper.

Picture 5 (page 6) — what it shows: A classroom. The teacher stands on the left in a yellow saree and holds an open book. The children sit at wooden desks in white shirts and red dresses. Many of them have one hand raised high in the air, and they are smiling.

Answer
The students are raising their hands to answer the teacher’s question. They are sitting at their desks and smiling, because they know the answer.
What the teacher will do next: She will choose one student and ask him or her to answer.
Model written answer: The teacher is standing with an open book and has asked a question. The students are raising their hands to answer it. Next, the teacher will call one student and listen to the answer.
Why we raise a hand: If everyone speaks at once, nobody can be heard. Raising a hand lets the class take turns. That is the same turn-taking you practised in Let us Speak.
Tip for all five answers: Write two sentences. In the first, tell what is happening now. Use is or are with an -ing word — is helping, are cleaning. In the second, use will for what happens next.
