The post office is in front of the hospital.
Find the hospital on the map. It is the building with the red cross, at the top left. Now look straight down from it. The post office is drawn just below it.
Why “in front of”: In a picture like this, whatever is drawn lower down is nearer to us. The post office is lower than the hospital, so it stands in front of the hospital. The hospital is behind it.
Tip: Stand at the post office door and look ahead. The hospital would be at your back. That is what in front of means.

There is a bookstore near the Children’s Park.
Look at the lower half of the map. The Book Store is on the left. The Children’s Park, with its swing and slide, is just to its right. They are side by side.
Why “near”: The bookstore is not above the park and not below it. It is simply close by, at the same level. When two places are close together we say one is near the other.
Tip: A child can walk from the park to the bookstore in a minute. That short distance is what near tells us.

Find the school — it is the long building with the dark red roof, in the middle of the map. Now look above it. The bank, with the green roof, is drawn higher up, with a road in between.
Why “behind”: Whatever is drawn higher up in such a picture is farther away from us. The bank is higher than the school, so it is behind the school.
Tip — a pair to remember:behind and in front of are opposites. The bank is behind the school, so the school is in front of the bank.

There is an ambulance between the post office and the hospital.
The white van with the red cross is standing on the road. The hospital is above that road. The post office is below it. So the ambulance has one building on each side.
Why “between”: We use between when something has two things, one on either side. The blank here names two places — the post office and the hospital — so between is the only word that fits.
Tip: If the sentence has the word and joining two places, the answer is almost always between.
