Answer
All eleven words come from this chapter. Five can be counted and six cannot.
| Countable Nouns | Uncountable nouns |
|---|---|
| Helmet | Traffic |
| Buses | Pollution |
| Cars | Speed |
| Pedestrian | Safety |
| Bicycle | Transportation |
| Fuel |
Why each one goes where it goes:
| Word | C or U | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic | U | We say a lot of traffic, never three traffics. |
| Pollution | U | It is dirt in the air and water. We cannot count it. |
| Helmet | C | One helmet, two helmets. |
| Buses | C | Three buses came to the stop. |
| Cars | C | Five cars were waiting at the light. |
| Speed | U | We say at great speed. It is how fast something moves, not a thing we can count. |
| Pedestrian | C | One pedestrian, many pedestrians. |
| Bicycle | C | Two bicycles are kept in the shed. |
| Safety | U | Safety is an idea, not a thing. We cannot say two safeties. |
| Transportation | U | It means the carrying of people and goods. We cannot count it. |
| Fuel | U | Petrol and diesel are liquids. We say a litre of fuel. |
The pattern to remember: Things we can hold and count one by one — helmet, bus, car, pedestrian, bicycle — are countable. Ideas and things that come in an amount — traffic, pollution, speed, safety, transportation, fuel — are uncountable. The book’s own rule says a noun names a person, place, thing or an idea, and it is the idea words that are usually uncountable.
Note about the book: The table printed on page 33 has seven blank rows in each column, but there are only eleven words in all. So some rows will be left empty — five in the first column and six in the second.
