D. Look at the picture story.The four-picture story printed on page 62 of your book. (1) A girl throws grains on the ground for the squirrels and the sparrows. (2) Her grandmother puts the wet clothes on the clothesline. (3) A strong wind blows, the clothes flap on the line and the grandmother goes into the house. (4) The sparrows and the squirrels sit on the clothes and the two of them come and look.
Answer
Look at the four pictures in order. Together they tell one small story. Here it is, picture by picture.
Picture 1. A girl is standing in her courtyard under a tree. She is throwing grains on the ground. Squirrels and sparrows have come to eat them. They are her friends.
Picture 2. Her grandmother has brought a bucket of washed clothes. She is putting them on the clothesline to dry. The girl stands and watches her.
Picture 3. A strong wind starts to blow. The clothes flap hard on the line. The girl holds her hair, and the grandmother goes into the house — she has gone to fetch the clothes pegs.
Picture 4. When the grandmother comes back, she sees a wonderful sight. The sparrows and the squirrels are sitting on the clothes and holding them down, so that they do not blow away. The girl claps her hands with joy.
What the story means: The girl fed the birds and the squirrels every day. When the wind came, the same little friends helped her family. Kindness is returned.
Tip for reading a picture story: Before you read the words under it, look at what has changed from one picture to the next — the weather, who is there, what they are holding. The change is the story.
