1. The Sundarpur villagers clapped for both the teams and the refree lifted the hands of both captains. Why did they do so? Do you agree with them?
Answer

They did it to honour both teams for playing a good game. The match was not about one team being better people than the other.

Three reasons they did so:

  • Both teams played well. The Green Warriors nearly hit Ravi with the last throw. The match was close right up to the final whistle.
  • Both teams played fairly. At the end “the players from both teams shook hands and appreciated each other for a good game”.
  • It was a village match. The teams came from two neighbouring villages. Clapping for both keeps the two villages friends.

Do you agree? Give your own view and one reason for it. A good answer is two or three sentences.

Sample answer: Yes, I agree with them. A game needs two teams, so the losing team worked just as hard as the winning one. If we clap only for the winners, the other children will not want to play again. Clapping for both keeps everyone happy.
Why it is fair: Only one team can win a match, but both teams can play well. The clapping was for the playing, not only for the winning.

2. How does teamwork help in winning games?
Answer

Teamwork wins games because the work is shared and each player does the part he is best at. The Lagori match shows this exactly.

Look at how the Tigers rebuilt their pile:

  • Ravi put back two stones and ducked.
  • Deepa added one.
  • Nidhi placed two and ran away from the ball.
  • Ravi came back for the sixth.
  • Prakash set the seventh.

Not one of them could have placed all seven stones alone. The ball would have hit them long before. Together they did it in a few seconds.

Teamwork also helps in these ways:

  • Players warn each other. Imran called out, “Deepa, watch out! Here comes the ball.” Deepa said, “Thanks Imran! I dodged the ball just in time.”
  • The team picks the right person for the right job. Prakash was chosen because he is a good runner.
  • Everyone cheers, so nobody gives up.
Why it works: One player has two hands and one pair of eyes. Six players have twelve hands and six pairs of eyes. When they share the work, more gets done in the same time.

3. According to Deepa, Lagori was more exciting than video games. Do you think she is right? Why or why not?
Answer

Deepa said, “That was so much fun! Even better than our video games!” and Ravi added, “Indeed! We should play our traditional games more.”

This question asks for your own view, so either answer can be right. What matters is the reason you give. Here are reasons on both sides.

Reasons to agree with DeepaReasons a video game may be fun too
You run, throw and dodge, so your body gets exercise. You can play it alone, even when no friend is free.
You play with real friends and cheer together. You can play indoors, in the rain or after dark.
It costs nothing — seven stones and a ball. Some games teach you puzzles and quick thinking.
The whole village can watch and join in. You can start and stop it at any moment.
Sample answer: Yes, I think Deepa is right. In Lagori you run, jump and dodge, so your body stays fit. You also play with your friends and the whole village cheers for you. A video game keeps you sitting in one place and you play mostly alone. I still enjoy a video game sometimes, but outdoor games are more fun.
What the chapter is saying: This unit is called Fun with Games. Ravi gives the chapter’s message in one line — “We should play our traditional games more.”
