Part I — a new game, an old game. Ravi takes his cousin Prakash to the children’s park. Guneet wants Prakash in the team because “he’s a good runner”. Prakash asks what Lagori is, and everybody looks at him “with great surprise”. What Lagori is. Nidhi says it is “actually a game of seven stones”. Imran explains: the seven flat stones are stacked one above the other; one team knocks the pile down with a ball, and the other team rebuilds it while dodging the ball. One game, two names. Prakash says, “In Rajasthan, we call this game Satoliya .” Guneet is delighted: in Sundarpur village it is Lagori, in Rajasthan it is Satoliya. The rules. Imran adds that the field is marked with a boundary, the players may not go beyond it, and the seven stones are stacked in the centre of the field. Part II —
