Answer
The referee blew the whistle to start the match.
Part II opens like this: “The next day, all children gathered for the match. The referee blew
the whistle and Deepa took the first shot.”
Why a match needs a referee: Somebody must decide when the game starts, when it
ends and whether a rule has been broken. The referee does that job. The same referee blew the
final whistle too, and then said, “The Sundarpur Tigers have won!”

Answer
Deepa took the first shot. She is the captain of the Sundarpur Tigers.
The book says, “The referee blew the whistle and Deepa took the first shot. She threw the ball
straight at the stack, and the stones scattered. Everyone cheered.”
Why her shot mattered: In Lagori the game only begins once the pile is knocked
down. Deepa hit the stack at the very first try, so her team could start rebuilding it at once.
A mistake in the book: Later, on page 81, exercise E prints “The referee
blew the whistle and Nidhi took the first shot” and “Nidhi threw the ball with
precision”. That does not agree with the story, which clearly names Deepa. Go by the
story: it was Deepa.

Part II — On the basis of your understanding the text, answer the following. 3. What did Prakash do before the final whistle.
Answer
Prakash set the seventh stone on top of the pile. That completed the stack.
The book says, “The Green Warriors tried one last time to hit Ravi with the ball. Before that,
Prakash came and set the seventh stone on top. The final whistle blew.”
Here is how the seven stones went back, one by one:

A slip in the book: Item 3 asks a question but ends with a full stop. It
should end with a question mark: “What did Prakash do before the final whistle?”

Part II — On the basis of your understanding the text, answer the following. 4. Who shook hands at the end of the match? Why?
Answer
The players of both teams shook hands — the Sundarpur Tigers and the Green
Warriors.
The book says, “The match was over. The players from both teams shook hands and appreciated
each other for a good game.”
Why they did it: to say “well played” to each other. One team had won and one had
lost, but both had played well and fairly. Shaking hands shows that they are still friends.
The idea behind it: This is called sportsmanship. A good
player is happy when he wins and is still kind when he loses. That is why the villagers clapped for
both teams and the Refree lifted the hands of both captains.
