Q1.
Assam has 5719 elephants. It has 3965 more elephants than Meghalaya. How many elephants are there in Meghalaya? Estimate the answer.
Answer
Assam: 57193965
Assam’s bar is 3965 longer than Meghalaya’s bar.

Estimate first. 5719 is about 5700 and 3965 is about 4000.

5700 − 4000 = about 1700 elephants

Now the exact answer. Assam has more, so we take the extra away.

5719 − 3965
Ones: 9 − 5 = 4
Tens: 1 is smaller than 6 → take 1 hundred, 1 H = 10 T
    11 − 6 = 5
Hundreds: 6 left, 6 − 9 cannot be done → take 1 thousand, 1 Th = 10 H
    16 − 9 = 7
Thousands: 4 − 3 = 1
= 1754

Regrouping shown in the place-value frame.

There are 1754 elephants in Meghalaya.

Why it happens: Meghalaya’s number plus 3965 makes Assam’s number. So to go back we take 3965 away.
Check it yourself: 1754 + 3965 = 5719.
Q2.
The population of leopards as per the 2022 census was 8820 in the Central India and the Eastern Ghats. It had increased by 749 in comparison to the number of leopards in 2018 in the same region. How many leopards were there in 2018? Estimate the answer.
Answer
?8820
The 2018 number grew by 749 to become 8820 in 2022.

Estimate first. 8820 is about 8800 and 749 is about 700.

8800 − 700 = about 8100 leopards

Now the exact answer. The number grew, so we go back by 749.

8820 − 749
Ones: 0 − 9 cannot be done → take 1 ten, 10 − 9 = 1
Tens: 1 left, 1 − 4 cannot be done → take 1 hundred, 11 − 4 = 7
Hundreds: 7 left, 7 − 7 = 0
Thousands: 8
= 8071

Regrouping shown in the place-value frame.

8071 leopards were there in 2018.

Why it happens: 749 leopards were added between 2018 and 2022, so taking 749 off 8820 brings us back to 2018.
Check it yourself: 8071 + 749 = 8820.
