Look at the last date printed in each calendar page.

Number of days in Feb 2024 = 29
Number of days in Feb 2025 = 28
29 − 28 = 1 extra day in 2024

So February 2024 had 29 days and February 2025 had 28 days.

Why it happens: 2024 is a leap year. In a leap year February gets one extra day, so it ends on 29 instead of 28.
Tip: Parv says he was born on 29 February 2016. That date comes only in a leap year, so his birthday falls once in four years.

Leap years come after every 4 years. So jump back by 4 twice, and jump forward by 4 three times.

Going back: 2024 − 4 = 2020,   2020 − 4 = 2016
Going ahead: 2024 + 4 = 2028,   2028 + 4 = 2032,   2032 + 4 = 2036

The line is filled like this:

2016, 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036
Why it happens: The extra day is added once in four years, so the leap years are spaced 4 years apart.
Check it yourself: Count on your fingers in fours from 2016: 2016, 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036. Every one of them has 29 February.

We know that most years have 365 days. How many days would a leap year have?
Answer

A leap year has one extra day in February.

365 + 1 = 366 days

So a leap year has 366 days.

Why it happens: In an ordinary year February has 28 days. In a leap year it has 29 days, which is 1 day more, so the whole year is 1 day longer.

Why it happens: The seven days come in a fixed ring — Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday — and then Sunday again. So you only have to step round the ring.

Why it happens: Every column of a calendar holds one weekday. Going straight down a column means adding 7 each time.
Tip: The Mondays of that July are 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 — all seven apart.

Laali is born on 04/07/2014 and Chotu is born on 04/12/2019. Who is older among the two and how much? Laali will turn 5 years old on ______________. Chotu’s 10th birthday will be celebrated on ________________.

Both dates are in DD/MM/YYYY form. So Laali was born on 4 July 2014 and Chotu on 4 December 2019.

Who is older? The one born earlier is older, and 2014 comes before 2019. So Laali is older.

From 4 July 2014 to 4 July 2019 → 5 years
From 4 July 2019 to 4 December 2019 → July, August, September, October, November → 5 months
Laali is older by 5 years 5 months

Laali will turn 5 years old on 04/07/2019 (4 July 2019).

Birth year 2014 + 5 = 2019, same day and month → 04/07/2019

Chotu’s 10th birthday will be celebrated on 04/12/2029 (4 December 2029).

Birth year 2019 + 10 = 2029, same day and month → 04/12/2029
Why it happens: A birthday comes back on the same day and the same month every year, so only the year number changes.
Tip: Both children were born on the 4th, so you only have to compare the month and the year.

Do it with a real packet:

  1. Find MFG (the making date) and EXP (the last safe date) on the wrapper.
  2. For part a), count from the MFG date up to today.
  3. For part b), count from today up to the EXP date.
  4. Count whole months first, then the leftover days.
Sample answer: Say the wrapper shows MFG 15/05/2025 and EXP 15/11/2025, and today is 20/08/2025.
a) 15 May → 15 August = 3 months, then 15 August → 20 August = 5 days
The packet is 3 months 5 days old.

b) 20 August → 20 October = 2 months
20 October → 31 October = 11 days, then 11 + 15 = 26 days
The biscuits are safe for 2 months 26 days more.
Tip: Always count the months first and the loose days afterwards. It is much easier than counting every single day.

Notice the day on which July 15 falls in your calendar. Now find out what day is August 15? September 15? October 15? What pattern do you notice? Share in grade. Now choose a date and look up the day on which it falls. Challenge your friends to guess what day will the same date fall in the following month.

The pattern: the day of the week moves forward each month, by as many days as the month has beyond full weeks.

July has 31 days → 31 = 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 3 → move forward 3 days
August has 31 days → move forward 3 days
September has 30 days → 30 = 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 2 → move forward 2 days

The game: pick any date, look up its day, and count how many days your month has. Add 3 for a 31-day month, add 2 for a 30-day month, and you can name the day in the next month before your friend finds it.

Why it happens: A week is 7 days long. A 31-day month is 4 full weeks and 3 days over, so the same date lands 3 weekdays later next month.
