Q1.
Estimate the number of teachers going. ____
Answer

About 50 teachers.

24 teachers → about 20
28 teachers → about 30
20 + 30 = about 50
Why it happens: We change each number to the nearest ten first, because tens are easy to add in the head.
Tip: An estimate is not the exact answer. It only tells us roughly what to expect, so a silly mistake is easy to spot.
Q2.
24 teachers and 438 children are going from their school. 476 children from a neighbourhood school along with 28 teachers are also going to the same village. How many teachers are accompanying the children?
Answer

52 teachers are going with the children.

Teachers = 24 + 28

The working, written in columns.
2 T + 4 O
2 T + 8 O
= 4 T + 12 O
10 ones make 1 ten, so 12 O = 1 T + 2 O
= 5 T + 2 O = 52
Why it happens: 4 and 8 make 12 ones. We cannot write 12 in the ones place, so we regroup 10 of them as 1 ten and carry it to the tens column.
Check it yourself: Our estimate was about 50, and 52 is very close to it.
