326 + 25
= 326 + 20 + 5

Why it happens: Adding 20 first is easy, and then only 5 ones are left to add.
Answer 675 + 5 = 680
675 + 5
5 ones and 5 ones make 10 ones = 1 ten
7 tens + 1 ten = 8 tens
= 680
Why it happens: The ones make a full ten, so the ones place becomes 0 and the tens go up by one.
Answer 410 – 12 = 398
410 − 12
= 410 − 10 − 2
= 400 − 2
= 398
Why it happens: Taking away 12 is the same as taking away 10 and then 2, just as the boy in the book shows.
Answer 204 – 10 = 194
204 − 10
Only the tens change: 0 tens cannot give 1 ten,
so 2 hundreds become 1 hundred and 10 tens
= 194
Why it happens: Taking away a ten leaves the ones untouched, so the 4 stays where it is.
Answer 811 + 99 = 910
811 + 99
= 811 + 100 − 1
= 911 − 1
= 910
Why it happens: 99 is just 1 less than 100. Adding 100 is easy, so we add 100 and then give the extra 1 back.
Answer 945 – 19 = 926
945 − 19
= 945 − 20 + 1
= 925 + 1
= 926
Why it happens: 19 is 1 less than 20. We take away 20, which is one too many, so we put that 1 back.
