Q1.
Estimate the answer. _________
Answer
About ₹130.
₹310 → about ₹310 ₹179 → about ₹180 ₹310 − ₹180 = about ₹130
Why it happens: 179 is only 1 away from 180, so rounding it changes the answer very little.
Tip: An estimate is not the exact answer. It only tells us roughly what to expect, so a silly mistake is easy to spot.
Q2.
Lou and Daisy brought ₹310 in all. After spending on food and some gifts, they are left with ₹179. How much money have they spent till now?
Answer
They have spent ₹131.
Rupees spent = 310 − 179
The working, written in columns.
0 ones cannot give 9 ones → regroup 1 T = 10 O Now the tens are 0, and 0 tens cannot give 7 tens → regroup 1 H = 10 T 10 − 9 = 1 one, 10 − 7 = 3 tens, 2 − 1 = 1 hundred = 1 H + 3 T + 1 O = 131
Why it happens: We had to regroup twice, because both the ones place and the tens place were too small to take away from.
Check it yourself: ₹131 + ₹179 = ₹310, the money they started with.
