Q1.
Ask your family members about the folk songs and dances from your region, and note them down in the table below.
Dance formFolk music
Answer

This is a find-out activity. Do it like this.

  1. Ask your grandparents, parents or an elder neighbour.
  2. Ask two questions: Which dance is done at weddings and festivals here? and Which songs do people sing?
  3. Write each dance in the left column and each song or music style in the right column.

This is the table as the book prints it.

Dance formFolk music

Sample answer — filled in for Rajasthan, the state Ritika visited:

Dance formFolk music
GhoomarMaand songs
KalbeliyaSongs played on the khartal
Chari danceSongs played on the sarangi

If you live in another state, your table will look different. For example: Bhangra and Giddha in Punjab, Odissi and Sambalpuri dance in Odisha, Maruni in Sikkim.

Why ask at home: folk songs and dances are not printed in books very often. They pass from grandparents to children by singing and dancing together, so the family is the best place to learn them.
Tip: the chapter says men in Rajasthan play the khartal and the sarangi. Ask your family which instruments are played in your region.
