Stanza 1 — the problem. “Today our papa / Is searching everywhere, / He has lost his spectacles, / It was his only pair!” Papa has just one pair of spectacles, so losing them is a real trouble. The word only is the important one here. Stanza 2 — why it matters. Without his spectacles Papa cannot read the newspaper, cannot watch TV and cannot cut the vegetables. Three ordinary daily jobs all stop at once. The stanza ends with his worried cry, “Oh! Where can it be?” Stanza 3 — the search. He checked inside his pockets, glanced under his chair, searched near the window, looked everywhere. Four different verbs — checked, glanced, searched, looked — show him hunting harder and harder.
