The beginning — a sound in the garden. It is a summer afternoon. Gopi is sitting in the veranda, reading a book. He hears something rustling past and falling with a thud in the garden. He thinks it may be a mango falling from the tree, so he puts his book aside and runs out. The search. Gopi looks in between the thick grass near the garden fence — nothing. He looks among the bushes — nothing again. Then his eyes fall on a heap of dry leaves. A white ball is lying on the heap. He picks it up. It is a hockey ball . The honest thought. Gopi wonders whose ball it can be. He looks around and peeps outside the gate, but sees no one. His mother calls him in out of the heat. He drinks a glass of water, lies down on the mat and says to himself, “I can’t keep this ball for myself. I will ask around.
