Who is speaking. The frog speaks the whole poem itself. Every line begins with I — “I sit”, “I flick”, “I live”, “I croak”, “I hop”. A poem in which an animal or a thing speaks about itself is a fun way to learn about it, because the facts arrive as the animal’s own story. Stanza 1 — where it lives. “I sit in ponds and in the rain, / Or hop about in a muddy drain.” The frog is happy in wet places. Rain does not send it indoors; rain is its favourite weather. Stanza 2 — the baby frog and the tongue. “As a tadpole, I swim with cheer, / A tiny fish-like thing, so clear!” A tadpole is a baby frog. It has a tail and no legs, so it looks like a tiny fish.
