The picture on page 62 shows a stretch of water with a sandy floor, rocks and weeds. Five creatures are drawn into it in thin white lines, so they are very easy to miss.

The five hidden creatures are:

  1. A turtle — near the top left of the water. It is swimming towards the left. You can pick out the pattern of plates on its shell and its flat front flipper.
  2. A crocodile — right across the middle. It is the biggest of the five. Its long snout with the row of teeth is on the left, and its tail curves away up to the top right corner.
  3. A fish — in the lower left part of the water, facing left. Look for the tall fin along its back and the wide, forked tail.
  4. A frog — just to the right of the fish, and a little lower. It is sitting with its back legs folded, facing left. Its big round eye gives it away.
  5. A crab — down on the sandy floor, near the middle. Look for the round shell, the two claws in front and the legs spread out on both sides.

Where each of the five is hiding. Hold your book at the same angle and look for the white outlines.
How to hunt for hidden pictures: Tilt the page so the light falls across it, and look for outlines, not colours. Then search for one shape at a time — first anything round like a shell, then anything long like a tail, then any eye. Searching for one thing at a time works far better than staring at the whole page.
Why this activity belongs in this chapter: The poem said, “My colours match the plants and trees, / I hide so well in grass and leaves!” This picture makes you do the work a snake has to do — find an animal that does not want to be found. Now you know how good the frog’s hiding really is.
