Use lines of symmetry to make paper cutouts of diya, boat, and other designs. Look along the border of the page to find the pictures.Pictures printed along the border of page 136.
Answer
Fold the paper once, draw only half the picture along the fold, cut, and open. Every picture on the border of page 136 has one folding line.
Look along the border. You will find a diya (lamp), a boat, a leaf, a tree, a butterfly, a heart, a kite, an umbrella, a flower, a four-leaf clover, an arrow, a circle and a bow.
Method — do it step by step:
Choose a picture from the border, say the diya.
Find its folding line. For all these pictures the line stands straight up through the middle.
Fold a paper in half and press the fold flat.
Draw only the half picture that lies on one side of the line, keeping its straight edge on the fold.
Cut along the outline through both layers. Do not cut the fold.
Open the paper. The full diya appears.
Half a diya on the fold becomes a whole diya when you open the paper.
Sample answer: I folded a sheet in half. On the fold I drew half a boat — a slanting side, the flat bottom and half of the sail. I cut along the outline and opened it. The boat came out with both sides exactly the same. I did the same for the diya, the leaf, the butterfly and the heart, and pasted them on a chart.
Why the fold is the trick: When the paper is folded, the two layers sit exactly on each other. One cut makes two matching halves at the same time. So you never have to make the second half match — the fold does it for you.
