Observe the shapes given on the border. Which of the shapes have reflection symmetry? Put a (✓) mark on them. Put a * on the shapes that have rotational symmetry.The shapes printed along the border of page 141.
Answer
Almost every shape on the border gets a tick, and most of them get a star too. Two shapes are the exceptions — the orange slanting four-sided shape and the thin red triangle.
Use one simple rule for the regular shapes:
A regular shape with n equal sides has: n lines of symmetry (so it gets a ✓) and it looks the same after a 1/n turn (so it gets a *)

Two shapes that get both marks, and one that gets only the star.
Why the parallelogram gets no tick: Fold it side to side and one slanting edge leans left while the other leans right — they do not meet. But turn it half way round and the leaning edges swap places and match perfectly. So it turns, but it does not fold.
Tip: Some border shapes are printed at a slant. That does not matter. Symmetry is about turning and folding the shape about its own centre, not about how it sits on the page.
