Q1.
(a) Look at the metro map and trace different routes from the Qutb Minar metro station to the Supreme Court metro station.

Answer
There is more than one way. Here are three that really work on the map. Trace each with a different coloured pencil.
Route 1 — Yellow Line, then Blue Line (the simple one)
Board the Yellow Line at Qutb Minar and travel north.
Stay on it through Saket, Malviya Nagar, Hauz Khas, Green Park, AIIMS, INA, Jor Bagh, Lok Kalyan Marg, Udyog Bhawan, Central Secretariat and Patel Chowk.
Get down at Rajiv Chowk. This is an interchange — the capsule there has a yellow dot and a blue dot.
Take the Blue Line going east. Three stations later you are at Supreme Court.
Route 2 — Lali's way: Yellow, Magenta, then Blue
Yellow Line from Qutb Minar to Hauz Khas (3 stations).
Change to the Magenta Line and ride east all the way to Botanical Garden.
Change to the Blue Line and come back west through Mayur Vihar and Yamuna Bank to Supreme Court.
Route 3 — Yellow, Pink, then Blue
Yellow Line from Qutb Minar to INA.
Change to the Pink Line and travel east to Mayur Vihar.
Change to the Blue Line and travel west to Supreme Court.
Same start, same finish, very different journeys.
Tip: A route on a metro map is only real if you can trace it without lifting your pencil, and you may only jump from one colour to another at an interchange capsule.
Q2.
(b) Lali says, “We can take the Yellow Line and change the metro at Hauz Khas to take the Magenta Line.” If the children follow Lali’s suggestion, at which station(s) do they need to change the metro line again to reach the Supreme Court metro station?
Answer
They must change once more, at Botanical Garden — from the Magenta Line to the Blue Line.
Step 1: Yellow Line from Qutb Minar to Hauz Khas, as Lali said.
Step 2: Change to the Magenta Line and ride east, through Kalkaji Mandir, all the way to the end of the map.
Step 3: The Magenta Line finishes at Botanical Garden. Look at that station on the map: its capsule has a magenta dot and a blue dot. So the Blue Line is there too.
Step 4: Change to the Blue Line and travel back west through Mayur Vihar, Yamuna Bank and Indraprastha to Supreme Court.

There is a second way to finish Lali's route: get down at Kalkaji Mandir (Magenta + Violet), take the Violet Line to Central Secretariat, the Yellow Line to Rajiv Chowk, and the Blue Line to Supreme Court. That means three more changes instead of one — so Botanical Garden is the better answer.
Why Lali's plan is not the best: The Magenta Line curves right round the south and east of the city. It carries the children far past the Supreme Court and they have to come back. Fewer changes usually means a shorter journey, but not always — you must also look at how far the line goes.

(c) Which route has the least number of stations between Qutb Minar and Supreme Court?
Answer
Route 1 has the least — the Yellow Line to Rajiv Chowk, then the Blue Line to Supreme Court. It is 15 stations in all, with only one change.
Count them on the map, circle by circle.

How to count without losing your place: Put your pencil tip on Qutb Minar. Slide it along the line and tap each circle, saying the numbers out loud. Stop at the interchange, write the number down, and start again from 1 on the next colour.
Why the other routes are longer: They both go far to the east before turning back. On a metro map the straightest journey through the centre is usually the shortest, because the lines were built to meet in the middle of the city.

(d) Which metro route(s), do you think, is/are the best way to reach the zoo from Qutb Minar? __________________
Answer
The best route is: Yellow Line from Qutb Minar to Rajiv Chowk, then Blue Line to Supreme Court.
Three reasons, in the order that matters:
Fewest stations. 15 stations, against 17 and 26 for the other routes.
Only one change. Changing trains takes time — you must walk from one platform to another. One change with a class of children is much easier than two or three.
It goes towards the zoo, not away from it. The Supreme Court station is close to the National Zoological Park, and this route heads straight for it.
Sample answer for the class discussion: "We should take the Yellow Line up to Rajiv Chowk and then the Blue Line to Supreme Court. It has the fewest stations and only one change, so we will reach the zoo soonest and nobody will get lost while changing trains."
