In daily life, we use other units of measuring length as well. Height is usually measured in feet and inches. Look at your ruler to see if inches are also marked on it. Find out how many cm and mm equal 1 inch.
Answer
1 inch = 2 cm 5 mm, which is 25 mm. And 1 foot = 12 inches, about 30 cm.
Look at your ruler. Many rulers have centimetres along one long edge and inches along the other.
Turn the ruler to the inch side. The numbers there are much further apart than the centimetre numbers.
Line up the 0 of the inch side with the 0 of the centimetre side.
Look at where the 1 inch mark falls on the centimetre side. It lands a little past the halfway point between 2 and 3.
Read it: 2 cm and about 5 small marks more — that is 2 cm 5 mm.

Why 12 inches make about 30 cm: Each inch is 25 mm. Twelve of them are 12 × 25 = 300 mm. And 300 mm = 30 cm, because 10 mm make 1 cm. So a foot is about three tenths of a metre.
Did you know? If you measure very carefully, one inch is 2 cm 5 mm and a tiny bit more (2.54 cm). Books for your class round it to 2 cm 5 mm, which is close enough for everyday work.
Try This: Measure your school desk in centimetres and then in inches. Divide the cm number by 25 mm — you should get roughly the inch number.
