Here is the filled table. Every time, ask: how many of these ropes, laid end to end, make 1,000 m?

The same kilometre, cut into different numbers of equal ropes.
Why it happens: Shorter rope, more ropes. If each rope is half as long, you need twice as many. 500 m is half of 1,000 m, so you need 2. And 10 m is one hundredth of 1,000 m, so you need 100.
Check it yourself: Multiply back. 4 ropes × 250 m = 1,000 m ✓. 5 ropes × 200 m = 1,000 m ✓. 100 ropes × 10 m = 1,000 m ✓. Every row works out to exactly 1 km.
