Q1.
(a) 32 × 8. Fill the grid and complete the two column methods.

32 (30 + 2)×8____ (8 × 2)__0 (8 × 30)256
32 (30 + 2)× 8____0 + 16 = 256
The grid and the two column methods printed on page 79. Some numbers are already filled in.
Answer

32 × 8 = 256. Here is every blank filled in.

Total240 + 16 = 256
Column method, all the pieces
32 (30 + 2)
× 8
Step 1. 8 × 2 = 16
Step 2. 8 × 30 = 240
Step 3. 16 + 240 = 256
Column method, joined up
32 (30 + 2)
× 8
240 + 16 = 256
Why 8 × 30 is 240 and not 24: The 3 in 32 is not three, it is three tens. So 8 × 3 tens = 24 tens = 240. Losing that zero is the commonest slip in the whole chapter.
Check it yourself: 32 × 8 = 32 × 4 × 2 = 128 × 2 = 256
Q2.
(b) 69 × 45. Fill the grid and complete the column methods.

The grid and the two column methods printed on page 79. Some numbers are already filled in.
Answer

69 × 45 = 3,105. Every blank filled in.

Column total2,7004053,105
Column method, all four pieces
69 (60 + 9) × 45 (40 + 5)
Step 1. 5 × 9 = 45
Step 2. 5 × 60 = 300
Step 3. 40 × 9 = 360
Step 4. 40 × 60 = 2,400
Step 5. 45 + 300 + 360 + 2,400 = 3,105
Column method, two rows
Step 1. 300 + 45 = 345 (5 × 69)
Step 2. 2,400 + 360 = 2,760 (40 × 69)
Step 3. 345 + 2,760 = 3,105
Read the grid two ways: Adding across the rows gives 345 and 2,760 — that is John's method. Adding down the columns gives 2,700 and 405 — the totals printed in the book. Both add up to 3,105, because you are adding the same four boxes.
Check it yourself: 69 × 45 = 69 × 45. Try the nearest multiple: 70 × 45 = 3,150, then take away one 45. 3,150 − 45 = 3,105
