We need the total number of seats. There are 35 rows, and each row holds 42 seats.

Total seats = 35 × 42
Step 1. Split 42 into 40 and 2.
Step 2. 35 × 40 = 35 × 4 × 10 = 140 × 10 = 1,400
Step 3. 35 × 2 = 70
Step 4. 1,400 + 70 = 1,470 seats
Check it yourself with doubling and halving: 35 × 42 = 70 × 21. And 70 × 21 = 70 × 20 + 70 = 1,400 + 70 = 1,470 ✓

Priya jogs 4 kilometres every day. How many kilometers will she jog in 31 days?

Priya will jog 124 kilometres in 31 days.

Total books = 36 × 48
Step 1. Split 48 into 40 and 8.
Step 2. 36 × 40 = 36 × 4 × 10 = 144 × 10 = 1,440
Step 3. 36 × 8 = 288
Step 4. 1,440 + 288 = 1,728 books
Check it yourself with the nearest multiple: 36 × 50 = 1,800. That is two boxes too many, and two boxes are 36 × 2 = 72. So 1,800 − 72 = 1,728 ✓
Q4.
Priya uses 16 metres of cloth to make 4 kurtas. How much cloth would she need to make 8 kurtas?
Answer

She would need 32 metres of cloth.

Notice that 8 kurtas is exactly double 4 kurtas. So the cloth also doubles.

Step 1. 8 kurtas = 2 × 4 kurtas
Step 2. Cloth needed = 2 × 16 m
Step 3. 2 × 16 = 32 metres

Another way, if you prefer to find one kurta first:

  1. Cloth for one kurta = 16 m ÷ 4 = 4 m.
  2. Cloth for eight kurtas = 4 m × 8 = 32 m.
Why doubling works here: Every kurta uses the same amount of cloth. If you sew twice as many kurtas, you must buy twice as much cloth. The relationship stays in step.
Q5.
Gollappa has 29 cows on his farm. Each cow produces 5 litres of milk per day. How many litres of milk do the cow produce in total, each day?

The cows produce 145 litres of milk each day.

We need the total milk in one day. There are 29 cows, and each gives 5 litres.

Total milk = 29 × 5
Step 1. Go to the nearest ten: 30 × 5 = 150
Step 2. That counts one cow too many, so take away 5 litres.
Step 3. 150 − 5 = 145 litres

Maska Cow Farm has 297 cows. Each cow requires 18 kg of fodder per day. How much total fodder is needed to feed 297 cows every day?

Fodder is the grass and grain a cow eats. We need the total for 297 cows, each eating 18 kg.

Total fodder = 297 × 18
