Draw the following pattern on a grid paper. Part of it is done for you. Now, complete the rest of the grid to get the full design.Left — the design to be drawn. Right — the dotted grid, with part of it already done.
Answer
Finish the shape by drawing its mirror image below. The part already drawn is the top half of a big diamond. Add the bottom half and the design is complete.
Look carefully at what is already there:
The top row has shaded squares with one empty square between them — shade one, skip one, shade one, skip one.
Below it are two lines of shaded squares that slope down from the middle, one going left and one going right. Together they make a big Λ shape, like the roof of a house.
Steps to complete it
Finish the top row — keep shading alternate squares right to the edge of the grid.
Find the lowest shaded square on the left slope and on the right slope.
Turn the Λ upside down. From those two lowest squares, draw two new slopes going down and inwards, until they meet in the middle. Now the two slopes make a large diamond.
Shade a small solid diamond in the middle of the big one, as in the woven mat picture.
Repeat the diamond across the grid if there is room, and colour it.
Add the lower “V” to the upper “Λ” and a diamond appears, with a small solid diamond at its heart.
Why it works: The design has a mirror line straight across its middle. Whatever is above the line is repeated below it, turned upside down. Once you spot the mirror line, the rest of the drawing is only copying.
Check it yourself: Fold your finished drawing along the middle line. The two halves should land exactly on top of each other. If a square sticks out, you have shaded one square too many.
