What are some easy things we can do in our school to prevent the wastage of water?
Answer

Most water in a school is not wasted by anyone on purpose. It is lost drop by drop, from taps nobody closed and leaks nobody reported. So the easy actions are the ones that fix exactly that.

Why 'report it' is the most powerful action of all: A child cannot repair a tap. But a child can be the one person who notices it and writes it down. Almost every leaking tap in every school has been walked past by hundreds of people. It gets fixed on the day one person reports it clearly, in writing, with the place named.

How can you collect and use rainwater at home or in school?
Answer

Rain falls free on your roof. Rainwater harvesting simply means catching it instead of letting it run into the drain. There are two things you can do with it: store it, or send it into the ground.

A. Catch and store it

  1. Fix a gutter along the edge of the roof so the rain runs to one corner instead of falling all round the building.
  2. Lead a downpipe from that corner to the ground.
  3. Let the first few minutes of rain run away — it washes the dust and bird droppings off the roof. This is called the “first flush”.
  4. Then let the water pass through a simple filter — a net, then gravel, then coarse sand — into a covered storage tank or a big drum.
  5. Keep the tank covered always, or mosquitoes will breed in it.

B. Send it into the ground (recharge)

  1. Dig a pit near the downpipe, about as deep as you are tall.
  2. Fill it with layers — big stones at the bottom, then small stones, then coarse sand at the top.
  3. Lead the overflow of the storage tank into this pit.
  4. The water sinks slowly down and refills the groundwater, so the school's own borewell and the neighbourhood's wells do better in summer.

What the stored water is used for

  • Watering the school garden and the trees
  • Washing the courtyard, the corridors and the toilets
  • Mixing with soil for the pots and the nursery
  • It is not used for drinking unless it has been properly filtered and treated
A rough idea of how much you get:
Rain on a roof of 100 square metres, in a rainfall of 10 cm
= 100 × 0.10 = 10 cubic metres = 10,000 litres
— from one good spell of rain, on one small roof.
Why it is worth the trouble: Rainwater that runs into the drain is gone for ever, and in a city it also floods the streets on the way. Rainwater caught in a tank saves the pump and the piped supply. Rainwater sent into the ground is stored where it cannot evaporate, and it comes back to everybody in the area through their wells.
Do you know? The Jal Shakti Abhiyan is a national campaign to save and protect water. It asks people to plant trees, catch rainwater and use water wisely — and it asks schools especially to teach students to fix leaks, harvest rain and use water carefully.
