More headgear you can add to your list: Gandhi topi, Nehru cap, the Assamese japi made of bamboo and palm leaf, the Kashmiri karakuli, the Ladakhi perak, the feathered headdress of Nagaland, the Mysore peta, an army beret, a construction worker's hard hat, a motorcycle helmet, a sun hat.

Why headgear says so much: A headgear can tell you three different things. Where a person is from — a Himachali topi is not tied like a Rajasthani safa. What they believe — many Sikh men wear a turban as part of their faith. What work they do — a helmet means a worker on a site, a road or in a mine. The same cloth, tied in a different way, becomes a different story.

The safety rule from page 87: Helmets are compulsory on two-wheelers. A helmet is headgear too — the kind that is worn not for beauty but to keep a head safe.
