Energy Flow Game — Prepare paper slips with names or pictures of energy sources: the Sun, wind, water, food, fuel and electricity. The second paper slips should indicate types of energy, like heat, light, movement and sound. The last paper slips should contain the uses or examples of where this energy is used — drying clothes, lighting a bulb, turning a turbine, cooking, running, etc.

You need three sets of slips. Make them in three different colours so nobody gets confused.

How to prepare them:

  1. Cut old paper or card into slips about the size of your palm.
  2. Write one word or draw one picture on each slip, in big letters.
  3. Make sure the numbers work out: for every source slip there must be a matching type slip and a matching use slip, so that every child finds a group of three.
  4. Shuffle all the slips together and hand out one to each student.
Tip for the teacher or the group leader: Plan the chains on a sheet of paper first. Then make the slips from that plan. If some children are left over, let them be the judges who check whether each chain makes sense.

Step 1: Assigning a Role — Give each student one card, where they will either be a source of energy, a type of energy, or a use. Step 2: Walk Around and Find Your Match — Students should walk around the class trying to find the two others who complete their energy chain. Step 3: Present to Class — Once matched (source — type — use), each group should quickly explain their match to the class.

How to play, step by step:

  1. Every student takes one slip and reads it quietly. Do not show it around yet.
  2. All students stand up and walk about the class, saying their own word aloud — “Sun!”, “Heat!”, “Drying clothes!”
  3. Each student looks for the two others who complete the chain: one source, one type, one use.
  4. When three students think they belong together, they stand side by side in the right order — source first, then type, then use.
  5. Each group says its chain out loud to the class, in one sentence: “We are the heat of the Sun and we help to dry clothes.”
  6. The class checks the chain. If it does not make sense, the group breaks up and hunts again.

What the game teaches: Energy is never just sitting still — it travels. It starts at a source, it appears as some type (heat, light, movement or sound), and it ends up doing a use for us. Once you can see that chain, you can explain almost anything around you: a fan, a bus, a bulb, a boiling pot, even your own running feet.
